What is an Extranet?

An extranet is a private business community that uses the Internet as the backbone for communication, commerce, and collaboration. Extranets allow organizations to extend mission-critical resources over the Internet to partners, suppliers, customers, and other individuals outside the physical walls of the organization.

Contrast it with an intranet, which is an Internet-technology network for sharing information within the boundaries of a single organization. An extranet uses Internet technology to share information among organizations.
